Before Salsa
I had been a football coach gaining my coaching certificates and developing my teaching style as a member of Yourstory, a community development organisation.
Working with children and adults gave me an insight into teaching physical skills to others regardless of age groups. Positive reinforcement, repetition and patience were critical components when successfully coaching any age group.
I established my self as a key member of YourStory as a volunteer coordinator however I fell critically ill and had to stop my coaching activities to take time to recuperate from my illness.
How I Started Salsa
It was devastating to have to put a stop to doing what I love, watching as my students increase their skills and confidence made it worth every effort.
Being very unwell but keen to regain my fitness to resume my coaching duties I new I had to do something. I took a chance with dancing because its an aerobic exercise and was gentle enough to for me to cope with.
I actually chose to dance the Salsa at random from a college evening class course guide, I didn't even really know what it was. Not knowing what salsa was but desperate to gain my fitness back, I paid for 20 lessons upfront. Truth be told I thought to my self during every one of the first ten lessons "What on earth am I doing here?" to begin with I felt completely out of place!
Then Fell In Love
Even though my previous dance background only consisted of dancing in clubs to hip hop and R'n'B, after ten lessons of Salsa something began to click. I started to get a feeling for the dance, It was the underarm inside turn and waist roll that clinched it!
I had developed a passion for Salsa dancing and wanted to dance more and more! When I first went to a Salsa club, it was a real eye opener, men and women were doing these amazing patterns together so fluid and smooth and so sexy. I wanted that too!
It was a bit of a struggle to begin with as dancing in partner was way outside my comfort zone. But pushed myself and as I improved normal clubbing began to seem like a distant second best to me.
I continued to dance learning all the small details that help make it easy to dance and naturally for me I wanted to pass that on. For a while I taught beginners who were a little frightened and a little confused how to improve their dancing, showing them the basics, giving them some confidence, etc...
Now Salsa Has Taken Over!
Being passionate about teaching and about Salsa dancing the natural progression was to teach dancing professionally. I joined a famous international dance company called "Arthur Murray Dance Studios".
There I learnt to dance ballroom and other latin dances and I perfected my teaching style but I missed Salsa. I wanted to get back to my first love in dance - Salsa! So here I am. Now I want to show you what Salsa is all about too. Are you ready to dance?
